Meet Dr. Imran Akram

Dr. Akram is a board certified adult psychiatrist with specialization in geriatric psychiatry who practices in the DMV area.  After graduating from the prestigious King Edward Medical University in Pakistan,  Dr. Akram came to the US for further studies. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at NYU and then psychiatry residency and geriatric fellowship at the University of  Virginia.

Besides having a vast experience of working with patients in his outpatient clinic, Dr. Akram is experienced in treating acute patients in hospitals and the chronically mentally ill in community mental health centers. Most recently, Dr. Akram has served as medical director of UVA Community Health Systems and as a lead physician at Fairfax CSB. These leadership positions allowed him to combine teamwork with problem solving, and provide education to colleagues and patients alike.

Imran Akram MD Psychiatrist

ADHD Specialist

ADHD Specialist

ADHD is more than difficulty paying attention. It can affect learning, behavior, emotional regulation, and daily functioning. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to reduce long-term challenges and improve outcomes for both children and adults.

I am dedicated to treating ADHD across all age groups, with extensive clinical experience and advanced training as a Certified ADHD Professional Clinical Provider. I provide comprehensive evaluations and personalized treatment without unnecessary outside testing.

ADHD is often misunderstood, leading many to delay care. My goal is to remove these barriers by offering clear guidance, evidence-based treatment, and compassionate support.

Women’s Mental Health

Women’s mental health care addresses the unique emotional, psychological, and hormonal factors that influence mental well-being across different stages of life. From adolescence to pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, timely evaluation and appropriate treatment are essential for long-term emotional stability.

Care is centered on comprehensive psychiatric assessment and individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. An evidence-based approach ensures thoughtful support for mood disorders, anxiety, and other mental health conditions affecting women

The focus remains on providing clear guidance, compassionate treatment, and consistent support- helping women achieve balance, resilience, and overall wellness.

Adult Psychiatry

Adult Psychiatry

Adult psychiatry focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions that affect emotional well-being, relationships, and daily functioning. Timely evaluation and appropriate treatment are essential for achieving stability, resilience, and long-term mental wellness.

Care is guided by thorough psychiatric assessments and personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual’s needs. An evidence-based approach ensures treatment addresses both immediate symptoms and long-term mental health goals.

Because adult mental health concerns are often delayed or overlooked, accessible and compassionate care remains critical. The emphasis is on providing clear guidance and effective treatment.

Treatment Style

Psychiatry is one of the most complex medical fields because, unlike most other medical specialties, there is no simple blood test or scan that could define diagnosis or treatment.

During the initial consultation, you should expect a comprehensive evaluation, including differential diagnoses, as well as a treatment plan that is specific to your needs and includes medication management and psychotherapy recommendations. This comprehensive treatment plan is then shared with you and explained thoroughly in an easily understood format.

Dr. Akram treats patients with ADHD, depression, OCD, PTSD, anxiety, panic disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, sleep problems, insomnia, Autism spectrum disorder, Traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and women’s mental health such as postpartum depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). I also discuss treatment options like Ketamine for severe depression.

Whether this is your initial encounter with psychiatry or you are an established patient elsewhere, Dr. Akram is here to help you in your mental health journey.

We look forward to working with you.
